THE BRUTALIST
This is the film of the year. A monumental historical drama with Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce, that won 3 Golden Globe Awards (Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director), the Silver Lion for Best Direction at the Venice International Film Festival and is expected to dominate at this year's Oscars. Hungarian-Jewish architect and Holocaust survivor László Tóth arrives in America in 1947 with nothing but his name. Navigating the poverty and degradation of a new life, his sole beacon of hope is the letters he exchanges with his wife, who remains stranded in Europe. But he soon crosses paths with a wealthy magnate who can potentially change his fortunes and offer him a path to the American Dream... Formally adventurous (shot in VistaVision, an endangered widescreen technique that uses 35mm film stock shot horizontally instead of vertically to give the film's scenes a sense of grandeur and monumentality -like Tóth’s own creations), Brady Corbet’s bold, ambitious epic offers a vast canvas of post-war life. Novelistic and richly detailed, Corbet’s portrait of Tóth is a compelling excavation into the immigrant experience, and a potent rumination on the dark connections between capitalism, power, trauma and art.
