CORNEL LUCAS EXHIBITION OPENING

In collaboration with the Estate of Cornel Lucas, we are proud to be hosting a photography exhibition with prints by one of the world’s most celebrated photographers: Cornel Lucas (1920-2012). The photographs reflect a shared passion for the history of cinema and the legendary film stars immortalised in Lucas' luminous images. Lucas pioneered film portraiture in the 1940s and 1950s and he created many iconic images, unmatched in image quality. Marlene Dietrich, Katherine Hepburn, Gregory Peck and Lauren Bacall and many more celebrated names, were captured in Lucas’ trademark film-noir chic. You are invited to the opening of the photography exhibition, with a special live introduction by Nigel Arthur, stills curator at the BFI for more than 20 years, who interviewed Lucas and made the short documentary Cornel Lucas: A Portrait, which will be screened during the event. Entrance is free, but please RSVP below. CORNEL LUCAS Born in Highbury, London, Cornel Lucas (1920 – 2012) was a renowned British photographer and a pioneer of film portraiture. From a specially equipped studio at Pinewood, he photographed major stars for the Rank Organisation, creating many iconic images of the leading actors of the era. In 1959, he opened his own studio in Flood Street, Chelsea, not far from the location of the Everyman, and focused on advertising and fashion photography, as well as portraits. Described in the Royal Academy Magazine as ‘one of the greatest British portrait photographers of the 20th century’, Lucas lived and worked in London for over 80 years. A highlight of Lucas’ seven decade long career came in 1998, when he received a Bafta award for his outstanding contribution to the British Film Industry, a unique honour for a stills photographer, reflecting his masterful technical ability and as a brilliant photographic artist.PT1H30MUCORNEL LUCAS EXHIBITION OPENING"CORNEL LUCAS EXHIBITION OPENING"
