COMRADE TAMBO'S LONDON RECRUITS + LIVE Q&A

We are celebrating and honouring Freedom Day with a special screening of a documentary about the young British women and men who were recruited by the exiled leader of the African National Congress (ANC), Oliver Tambo, to undertake missions on the ground in South Africa. Following the screening we are honoured to hold a live discussion panel and Q&A with one of these London recruits as well as representatives from the creative team of the film. More details and guests to be announced soon. Please note there will be no ads and trailers, and the film will start at its advertised time. By the late 1960s, the Apartheid regime in South Africa had reached brutal new heights. Nelson Mandela and other freedom fighters had been imprisoned, killed or forced into exile. The ANC was outlawed and broken, from the leadership through to the township cells. In efforts to reinvigorate support for the liberation struggle, exiled ANC leader Oliver Tambo lit the fuse on a plan that saw young British women and men undertake secret missions in South Africa disguised as honeymooners, holiday makers and business trippers. Sworn to secrecy for decades, this documentary thriller propels you into a nail biting journey of espionage with those who risked it all in taking on one of the 20th century’s most feared and brutal regimes. A potent mix of never-before-seen archive footage, action packed drama and candid testimony from the recruits, eyewitnesses and secret police, the film is a compelling journey into the heart of Apartheid South Africa. London Recruits won Best Documentary on its debut at the Johannesburg Film Festival in South Africa in 2024 and has been hailed by Variety Magazine as an ‘edge of your seat thriller’ with ‘jaw dropping twists’. The film features interviews from surviving ‘London Recruits’ and freedom fighters who recount their tales of espionage and danger. the filmmakers hope that the film will not only be an opportunity to recount a courageous and intriguing story but also be an inspiration to people to take up the battles against racism and the many other challenges facing us today.PT2H20M12A2025-04-28
